welcome! i’m alexis Oppong kakyire a 25 year old artist, born in ghana and raised in the bronx new york where i currently live. i mostly create sculptures, drawings, and photographs. my work focuses on themes like fantasy, lore, and beauty. the general african tradition of offering some intricate take on why a mosquito might make its buzzing sound is my ministry. i delve deeply into stories and fantasy because i feel they are the only things that actually touch and stay with people when interacting with art.

ive been an artist my entire life with little to no formal training. i graduated from a nyc charter school in 2016 and went on to attend the cooper union (school of art) for 4 years. after this arduous and traumatizing “experience” i had to completely rework my relationship to making art and reclaim it as the positive coping mechanism and intuitive practice it was for me when i started as a child.

NOW I STRIVE TO HAVE MY WORK CREATE A PHYSICAL Reaction FOR THE VEIWER. Instead of over analyzing the piece to death, i want gazing at the art to feel like an exchange of energy. The art you own should feel like it’s doing more than just sitting in a frame on your wall. when you look at it it should look back.

along with the prints for sale here, i am currently working on a series of 30 individual drawings that shuold be completed this summer. they can be loosely interpreted as freaky children’s book covers. in the sense that books are portals into a completely different or slightly altred reality.

each drawing is completely different from and unrelated to the last, but it’s more fun to create connections between them as more portals continue to pop up. i’ll be updating the site with images from the series as it continue’s to progress.

i intend to have what i feel guide me to continue creating without shame and fear.
